superbowl sunday funday!

SuperBowl Sunday is just around the corner and is a perfect way to gather with friends and family whether you are hosting a party or going to a party.  It's also a perfect way to set yourself up for a nutrition disaster if portion control or healthy options are not present.  Since the SuperBowl is only one time out of the year, it's perfectly fine to indulge, but do so in moderation.

If you are hosting a Superbowl party, serve your fellow fans and not-so-fellow fans nutritious appetizers and snacks to munch on during the game.  Kick off the game with fibrous and dense foods to keep tummies satiated and prevent overeating such as  roasted mixed unsalted nuts, fresh vegetable and fruit slices with salsa and protein-packed greek yogurt or hummus for dip.  For the greek yogurt vegetable dip, I have created my own greek tzatziki sauce, which consists of 0% greek yogurt, diced cucumbers, fresh lemon, a dash of dill weed, garlic, salt and pepper.  Similarly, for my fruit dip, I use 0% greek yogurt, fresh lemon and agave or honey.  During the second half of the game, you can serve fresh air popcorn and meat kabobs with chicken and steak or lean rolled up lunch meats with low-fat cheese.  Microwaved popcorn contains chemicals such as diacetyl in the lining of the bag, which can be toxic to our health.  Post game, you can celebrate with a little light treat such as angel food cake or homemade granola topped with fat-free cool whip fresh strawberries and blueberries.

If you are a guest of a Superbowl party, here are some tips to prevent overindulging:

  • Eat right before you go to the party so you are less likely to overeat.
  • Snack on the nuts and fruits and vegetable platter since they contain fiber thus making you feel more full.
  • Have alcohol in moderation. Alcohol serves no nutritional value, will cause blood sugar levels to drop and make you hungry.
  • Bring a platter of your own healthy appetizers to share so you don't feel pressured into eating the host's junk food.
  • Enjoy foods, but do so in moderation and control portion sizes.

Have a great SuperBowl Sunday!
